News Release, 11 November 1994
INCLINE VILLAGE, NEVADA -- The IEEE Computer Society LAN/MAN (Local Area Network/Metropolitan Area Network) Standards Committee, announced the formation of Project P802.14, Cable-TV Protocol Working Group, with the goal of producing standards suitable for two-way transmission of multiple services over Cable-TV systems. Anticipated services include high-speed data communication to computers in homes and businesses, compressed video for conferencing and video phone calls. In addition, new applications like interactive games and video shopping will be supported over the facilities that will be addressed by the new working group.
Standards are needed for new services to be offered on cable systems (such as data, voice, and video) so that different vendors' products will interoperate. Standards will provide economies of scale for a mass market resulting in lower cost products. These advantages have been particularly apparent in local area networks, where Project 802 has been active since 1980. In providing the network protocols for use over the cable system, the committee is expected to compliment related work being done in other groups to specify interfaces within the television set-top box and to provide high-speed multimedia communication facilities to the home and the business.
Proposals are being solicited for medium-access and physical layer protocols suitable for the hybrid fiber-coax Cable-TV network environment.
